It was around 1993 or 1994. I was the advertising manager for the student publication on the college campus I was attending. I had a few entrepreneurial endeavours under my belt and my goal was to get my business degree because I had my mind set on working with a large corporation as a c-suite executive.
One day, I received a call from a small general store that was in a small town about ninety minutes south of where I lived. The owner promptly told me that he had heard of me and asked me to come to his store, do some analysis, and let him know what I thought could be done to boost revenues.
To be honest, I was a bit excited and honored that someone wanted to hear my opinion. On the other hand, I had never done anything like this before. But, being “that kid” that thought he knew everything I promptly told the gentleman I would be happy to help and I scheduled a time to visit his store for the day.
Long story short, I visited the store, used what knowledge I had, and gave the business owner my assessment. What I did not know would happen is how much I would love working with businesses and helping them grow. I discovered I had a talent for seeing processes and systems. I found out that I was good at helping businesses come up with a plan to success.
Today, I work with small businesses and fortune 500 companies in the areas of business growth, marketing and training and development. I have been fortunate to build several seven-figure businesses as well as helped many companies increase profitability by as much as 20%. I have been able to help individuals monetize their ideas.
On occasion I get asked why I love what I do and how I do it. I think the simplicity is I have been able to achieve the success I have had because I understand people and what it takes to motivate, change behaviours, make commitments, and instil confidence. It does help that I am a “process junky” and understand the value of planning, executing and evaluating.
